The Studio and Picnic Grounds

Robert acquired his first Box Brownie camera at age 10, and in his early 20’s he travelled around Australia on a photographic expedition before packing his 90cc motorcycle onto a ship and heading off to trek through Central America and Mexico.

He moved to the US to study professional photography in New York, where he photographed his first wedding in 1971 at Dubois, Wyoming – an experience that was to shape his life.

In 1972 he returned to Australia to start a full time career in portrait and wedding photography, quickly developing a reputation for capturing the naturalness and spontaneity of his subjects. After five years working from his car, he opened his first studio in Abermain, later purchasing 40 acres at Brunkerville to set about establishing Australia’s FIRST RAINFOREST STUDIO.

Robert won numerous National and International prizes (including the prestigious Kodak International Newspaper Award) in the early days of his career, eventually becoming a National Judge for the Institute of Australian Photographers.

Since 1981, Robert has derived great pleasure revealing and enhancing the diverse natural beauties of his ancient Hunter Valley bushlands. With a practiced eye, Robert has created spaces within spaces, inspiring countless amateur and professional students.

The Old Brush Studio Gallery exhibits Robert’s photography collection by appointment, featuring many works not previously shown. Original landscapes are available for sale, $50 to $500.
